Should Highway Signs be Hilarious?

Honorable Influence - founder of Mindful Marketing

Where do you go for a good laugh – TikTok, a favorite podcast, late-night TV monologues? How about highway signs? Some states have turned to wisecracking signage to engage drivers with traffic messages, but not everyone is laughing.

You might think that those who manage and maintain the nation's roads and highways have little need for marketing, but they do. Although they may not be exchanging physical products, they want drivers to embrace ideas that might influence their actions, including messages with important information like:
 • Vehicle crashes
 • Road closures and detours
 • Inclement weather warnings
 • Dangerous road conditions
 • Safety recommendations
 • Amber/Silver Alerts

Unfortunately, whether people are sitting on a sofa or driving in an SUV, they often ignore and or/dismiss all kinds of promotional messages, which is why many advertisers go to great creative lengths to make their ads stand out. Some creators of highway signs have adopted a similar strategy.

There’s not much that can be done creatively with boxy LED letters on a black background, but humor is one amendable approach. Here are examples of highway signs aimed at hilarity:

 • Visiting in-laws? Slow down, get there late
 • Four I’s in Mississippi. Two eyes on the road
 • 100 is the temperature not the speed limit
 • Slow down you must. May the fourth be with you
 • Hocus pocus, drive with focus
 • Buckle up. Windshields hurt
 • Jingle bells, speeding kills, buckle up today
 • Don’t be a grinch, let them merge
 • You’re not a firework. Don’t drive lit
 • Use Yah Blinkah

Such signs make many people chuckle, but one organization standing for seriousness is the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the U.S. Department of Transportation agency that “provides stewardship over the construction, maintenance and preservation of the nation's highways, bridges and tunnels” while also helping state and local governments enhance mobility, safety, and innovation.

This past December, the FHWA published the 11th edition of its “Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways.” In Section 2L.07, page 519 of the 1161-page compendium, the agency outlined a variety of specific ways aimed at making traffic messages safer:

“A CMS [changeable message sign] should not be used to display a traffic safety campaign message if doing so could adversely affect respect for the sign. Messages with obscure or secondary meanings, such as those with popular culture references, unconventional sign legend syntax, or that are intended to be humorous, should not be used as they might be misunderstood or understood only by a limited segment of road users and require greater time to process and understand.”

The FHWA has good reason for wanting serious signs. Given that most people casually assume their safety on roadways, it doesn’t hurt to be reminded of driving’s inherent danger, including that a person is much more likely be killed in a car accident than in a commercial airline accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that 42,795 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2022. Furthermore, a leading cause of traffic accidents is distracted driving, which could result from many things, including roadside signage.

Despite my decades of driving experience, I’m no expert on road signs, so I reached out to a few people in my home state of Pennsylvania who are well-qualified to address the FHWA’s new guidelines. Together their agencies wield significant influence over the roads and highways in the nation’s fifth most populous state.

It’s hard to consider roadways in the commonwealth without including the Pennsylvania Turnpike, “America’s first superhighway.” Responsible for operating and improving its more than 550 miles of roadway is the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC). Two of its key leaders, CEO Mark Compton and Director of Traffic Engineering & Operations Tom Macchione, shared with me the PTC’s priorities related to roadside signage.

The FHWA’s new sign guidelines should pose little difficulty for the PTC, which already adheres closely to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for CMS. More specifically, the PTC upholds Section 1D.01, p. 31 of the manual’s 11th edition, which requires that traffic control devices:
 • Fulfill a need
 • Command attention
 • Convey a clear, simple meaning
 • Command respect from road users
 • Give adequate time for proper response

Although the PTC realizes that unconventional messages on CMS may be well-intentioned, it holds that they do not meet the preceding criteria, and adds:

“It has been shown that inappropriate or excessive use of a traffic control device such as a CMS can diminish its effectiveness. There is no objective evidence that the use of unconventional messages on CMS have any greater effect on driver behavior than conventional sign messages. Additionally, the use of unconventional messages have the potential to result in additional time and attention on the message when not understood by the driver, resulting in an increased safety risk.”

Picture

For these reasons, the PTC avoids humorous CMS messages and instead uses standard MUTCD-approved traffic safety messages. Consistency is a priority for the PTC, which works hard to comply with both federal and state requirements for signs. The source of the latter guidelines is mainly the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, or PennDOT.

I reached out to PennDOT Safety Press Officer Fritzi Schreffler, who was happy to weigh in on the recent roadway signage debate. She prefaced that she’d share her personal perspective, which veered somewhat from a more conventional approach.

Schreffler has long been a vocal advocate for nonstandard messages on road signs, as over the years she’s seen many examples of drivers not noticing or ignoring routine signage even after passing it repeatedly. In contrast, she believes humorous messages like “Use ya blinkah” can be effective.

One such PennDOT safety message she identified, “Don't drive star-spangled hammered,” generated significant buzz (no pun intended) across the state. Schreffler suggested there’s great value in messages like that one that stay top-of-mind for drivers, as she reasoned, “If people are talking about the signs, isn’t that a good thing?”

Perhaps the group of people that deals most often and directly with drivers’ reactions to roadway signs is the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). Although the PSP does not create or maintain CMS signs, its troopers see the signs’ impact firsthand.

A member of the PSP since 2006, Lieutenant Adam Reed is the PSP’s Communications Office Director. Like Schreffler, Reed was glad to offer his personal perspective on roadway signs. He said he’s found that people sometimes do respond to non-traffic control messages, such as “Buckle-Up.” However, he cautioned about giving drivers multiple things to process, and for that reason he appreciates the FHWA’s desire to keep messages simple.

Reed suggested that such simplicity is especially important during inclement weather when drivers have even more to manage and reaction time is especially critical: “Less information to process is usually better and safer.”

However, Reed also recognizes that humor in messages sometimes makes them easier to remember, consequently, he can understand agencies wanting to lean into levity. He added that messages about not driving impaired or distracted can be very helpful, provided that people remember them, and that the PSP is always interested in effective messages.

It’s interesting that among these four very knowledgeable individuals who represent three highly vested stakeholder groups there doesn’t appear to be a clear consensus about content for roadside signage; rather their perspectives touched many points on the spectrum from CMS being simple and direct to signs being humorous and perhaps more memorable.

At first glance, this disparity of opinion may be disconcerting, as some may reason that there will be a breakdown in driving in PA if these influential people are not on exactly the same page. However, the fact that these individuals have some differences in perspectives may be a very good thing.

One big benefit of such diversity of opinion is that it can avoid groupthink, or “reaching a consensus without critical reasoning or evaluation of the consequences or alternatives.” Each individual I interviewed held their own well-reasoned perspective that they clearly articulated for me, and I’m sure they would do the same for others.

At the same time and perhaps even more important, all of these key stakeholders recognized that others have different opinions that also have certain merit, and even if they disagree with those perspectives, they can still respect them and dialogue civilly about the differences.

These two attributes are integral to most successful organizations: It’s very helpful to have individuals and departments that bring different perspectives, including creative vision and risk assessment. It’s also important that the disparate groups can, despite their differences, work together toward a common goal. Marketing firms can especially benefit from this kind of healthy dissidence.

Of course, at some point, decisions need to be made and actions taken, which is what the FHWA’s new manual has done. The consistency it provides for signage within and across state lines should be helpful, even if there are some differences in interpretation and implementation of those guidelines.

Having been fortunate to engage in the conversations above, my own opinion on CMS content is still evolving. Just during the time I’ve been writing this article, I encountered one sign with the straightforward weather-related message: “Dense fog ahead. Use caution.” I was glad that I and other drivers could see that warning.

Meanwhile, as a marketing professor who has studied playful teasing in advertising and who often uses humor in teaching, I appreciate how effective humor can be in gaining attention and boosting memory.

It may be idealistic, but my hope is that the debate about FHWA’s new road sign guidelines will lead to the formation of a ‘middle lane’ that has room for both types of messages without sacrificing driver safety. With so many smart and creative people attuned to this issue, someone will likely find a solution that integrates both sets of benefits.

Clear, singular direction is nice when it’s available. Sometimes, however, life presents competing options, each with attractive features. In such situations, it’s possible that two different approaches both can be “Mindful Marketing.”

I think it's interesting that there was many varying opinions on the issue, but I agree that the different opinions is a positive thing. I think it is important to think about the safety and effectiveness that simple and direct signs have. However, I do see how people might ignore them or not notice them because it is something that we see often or that might not catch our attention. I personally enjoy humorous signs when they aren't about something I need to react fast to. I think humorous signs are good for getting people to wear a seatbelt or drive sober, but not weather and road work related signs that you need to be more vigilant for.

I thought this article was very interested and highlighted a lot of important points to think about in a situation such as this. This topic poses a lot of different issues and arguments because the first and most important point in driving is safety. Traffic signs are meant to enforce the law and are also in place to keep us safe on the roads, however because the same signs are so often seen, sometimes people begin to ignore them, and then they no longer serve the purpose they were put there for. Personally, I don’t think that humorous traffic signs are necessarily a bad thing.
However, they should be kept short and sweet, and get to the point easily so that they are not distracting to drivers. I think humorous signs, that have regulations, could actually help drives stay more alert and engaged when driving. I definitely do understand the variety of different viewpoints on this topic though because it definitely conflicts with safety issues and many people may think that humorous signs could be distracting.

I think the humorous sings are funny and can be effective, but I also think they can seem unserious and may not be the smartest move for drivers. So I feel torn in having an opinion.

This was something that I had never thought about before, or had even crossed my mind as a driver who tries to stay safe while getting from place to place. My first thought aligned fairly well with one opinion in the article. To me it seems like this would only take extra time for the person driving to process what it means, and not all people might get the context of the joke. Also I don't think that if people aren't looking in general that this would cause them now to read a sign that previously wouldn't have. I also agree with the article that having varying opinions because there is usually 2 sides to a coin. I do think it's important to listen to the other side regardless of your first original opinion.

As I reflect on the debate surrounding the use of humor in highway signs, I find myself torn between the perspectives of those advocating for straightforward, safety-focused messages and those championing the effectiveness of humor in capturing attention. On one hand, the Federal Highway Administration's emphasis on clear, simple messages to ensure safety is entirely valid, especially considering the sobering statistics on traffic accidents and fatalities. On the other hand, the arguments presented by individuals like Fritzi Schreffler, who sees value in memorable and humorous messages, resonate with my understanding of the power of humor in communication. The diverse opinions shared by stakeholders in Pennsylvania highlight the complexity of the issue, and I appreciate the recognition of differing perspectives while still working towards a common goal. Perhaps, as the debate continues, a balanced approach that integrates both safety and creativity can be achieved, offering drivers the benefit of both attention-grabbing content and crucial safety information. Ultimately, the evolving discourse on highway signs exemplifies the delicate balance between effectiveness and safety in marketing communication.

Dr. Hagenbuch gives a lot of good insights on the debate of whether humor should be used in highway scenes. I am split on the issue because there are many pros and cons of humorous highway signs. On one hand, humorous highway signs are more engaging and are more easily remembered than non-humorous signs. I think many drivers, myself included, pass by, and do not pay attention to the typical signs without second thought. Humorous signs could help solve this problem. On the other hand, humorous signs can lack clarity and simplicity. The point of the sign is negated if its message is not clearly conveyed. This could potentially be dangerous, especially in poor weather, if a sign is not properly understood. Overall, I think it is possible for some highway signs to be humorous in the future if their messages are clearly stated. There will be situations though where humorous highway signs will cause more harm than good.

It is interesting to see how people's opinions change depending on what their job is and how it relates to what the road signs are saying. I can understand why each person felt the way they do. I feel like Dr. Hagenbuch makes a good point regarding how these differing opinions can be a good thing. While contrasting opinions can make it harder to come to decisions, it has many benefits which I would say outweigh the cost. After reading this blog post, my own opinion is leaning more toward the simplistic, serious signage. I think the signs that express the point simply will help drivers be the safest and reminded of the dangers of driving. Signs that display minor humor could be effective, but some of the examples require quite a bit of thought to understand it. Drivers should not have to think hard about a sign warning them of driving dangers while focusing on the road. It could become its own danger.

I am someone who very much appreciates a good sense of humor, although I have many conflicting thoughts on the content of this article. On one hand, I see how adding humor to road signs could be beneficial as more people would be attuned to read signs if they grabbed their attention. On the other hand, I see how adding humor to signs could add potential dangers on the roads. Something that was mentioned in the article that grabbed my attention the most was how adding humor to signs may cause individuals to take more time to think and process the meaning of the signs. I also had a unique thought when reading this article that I am unsure if it makes sense or not. I was particularly thinking of teenagers when I had this thought, but sometimes adding humor to things causes people to take them even less seriously than before. Teenagers in particular may see the humor in these signs and decide to just drive even more recklessly thinking they are just joking around, which may add potential dangers on the roads to other drivers that weren't previously there.

I think that both sides to this debate offer valid points. On one hand, you have people like Fritzi Schreffler, a PennDOT Safety Press Officer, who support the idea of having humorous but informative highway signs. I like this side of the argument because these humorous signs allow the driver to better engage in what they are doing. These signs also stick in the drivers' heads better and help them to better remember the rules of the road. On the other hand, you have people like Lieutenant Adam Reed. Lieutenant Reed sides with the idea of using more simple signs on major roadways. He feels that sometimes the humor in these signs can take away from the drivers' focus and give them too much to think about. In reality, I think it is good that we have people on both sides of the argument. As stated earlier in the blog, I think that having people on both sides of the argument is important to developing the most effective plan moving forward. If both sides would team up and take a little bit of perspective from one another, I think they could agree on a solid common ground. With that being said, both teams would have to be willing to give and take. Personally, I like the idea of meeting in the middle. While I do find standard traffic signs very helpful, I also like a little bit of humor in my life. All in all, I think that this article is very mindful and gets its point across well.

When I read this article, I instantly thought of my driver's test, where the instructor would constantly ask you what sign you just passed and what it said. Making the signs humorous, would help with remembering what sign you just passed and just overall help people remember signs that they just passed. But on the other hand, I see the argument against humorous signs. They can be distracting and can cause more accidents.

When looking at this debate, I find it interesting that there are many different opinions on road signs. I can understand the argument that humorous road signs would result in more drivers reading the sign, but I believe this is more of a weakness than strength. From personal experience, I used to drive by one of these “humorous” signs often and I would always read it. This resulted in me getting distracted not only by what the sign says but I would then think about the sign instead of the road. I believe that this would happen to many drivers and would ultimately be a detriment. But even with this, I am not fully on the side of serious road signs. I believe that there needs to be a change to draw more attention to road signs, but I do not think humorous messages are the way to go.

When I first started reading this, I was instantly curious about the public's take on these humorous attempts at public safety. At first, I did not think that these signs were a good idea, and I initially thought that they would be a bigger distraction than help. But, as I continued reading, I began to agree more with people like Fritzi Schreffler (PennDOT Safety Press Officer). While reading, I was thinking about to any road signs that I have read that have stuck in my head. The first one that came to mind had rhyming words "click it" and "ticket". This connection with the article made me realize that I think humorous, and signs could be beneficial to spread safety cautions to drivers, especially if they rhyme or have other memorable language. However, I do think that these messages need to be short and sweet, so they do not distract drivers too much. Overall, this article made me truly think about a topic that I did not think could be controversial to many people: road signs.

I always enjoyed reading those signs but never actually thought about how people would debate over them. I never considered that they may be distracting to some, but humorous to others. After reading the article, I still believe road signs should be humorous. When you can get a slogan stuck in someone's head and they actually do it, that's perfect marketing. We are not robots, and the last thing someone who is having a bad day is just to read some other sign. Who knows, maybe a funny sign would cheer up someone's day and actually keep them safer.

I think both sides of the CMS content have valid points that have aspects to consider when moving forward with signage along highways and major roads. While I think the examples included in the article are funny and would make me smile as a driver, I do think they could cause more distractions at times. Specifically, I could see a driver finding a sign amusing and then pulling out their phone to take a picture and share it with others, leading to a higher risk of accidents. Similar to the conclusion in the article, I think a balance could be struck where humorous signs could be used in fair weather situations and simple, direct signs should be used in more urgent situations.

I can’t say I have ever thought about this topic, but after reading this article I see the importance of it. Road signs can serve as good reminders to slow down or keep your eyes on the road. I have seen many different street signs and usually the funny ones stick with me more. That being said, the point of the signs isn’t to be funny, but to save lives. Both sides of this issue both have valid points. I understand how the importance of road signs should be shown through the messages. I also understand that a little bit of comedy can be beneficial for getting drivers’ attentions. As mentioned in the article, a balance is definitely a possible outcome of this situation. It should be possible to have road signs that get the needed message across while also making sure the messages aren’t dry and forgettable. This road sign debate isn’t a simple issue and the effects are certainly important. At the end of the day, drivers could use reminders while on the road, and as long as they are received they can save lives.

I think this topic is pretty funny on how even the littlest things like traffic signs can be such a hot topic. But from personal experience I've seen both types of street signs and both can be engaging. I personally think that the more humorous signs are more engaging and light hearted while the more serious signs can bring light to the danger driving can be. But I think if I was to look and think about a street sign it would be a more humorous one rather than a serious one.

o I think both sides of this debate are valid and make sense in different ways. On one hand, I can see why using humor in highway signs provides some positivity to a long road trip, or possibly provides a laugh from passing cars. While providing humor, I think it still gets the point across and the safety presence is still there. On the other hand, I can see why some people may think it interferes with the legitimacy of the safety it should be providing. I can also imagine by using humor, some people may not take it seriously such as younger drivers.

In my personal experience road signs with humor grab my attention but i am less likely to take the sign seriously. On the other hand road signs that dont have any humor dont grab my attention as much, but when I see them i take them more serious. I think this is a valid debate to have. I would like to see if the FHWA’s can find the perfect balance between grabbing peoples attention and have them take the sign serious.

as someone who lives in PA and drives the turnpike often I can admit that I have noticed the signs mentioned in the article. It is not a topic that I think about or consider outside of seeing the signs while driving but I do appreciate how they give important information in a, amusing way. driving can be boring, especially on the turnpike where there is not much variety in scenery, it is nice that those in charge of road sigange take into consideration their audience. After reading the article I believe that highway signs would remain as they are, funny while still conveying the information they need to. I would caution writes to be mindful that drivers can get distracted while in the road though.

In my opinion I think the use of humor in roadside signs is a good idea. I think humor like this helps the message stick in peoples minds. This could lead to the signs being more effective, as opposed to regular signs that I think people would be more able to ignore and get the message out of their head. I see some people commenting that this kind of sign could be a distraction and it may lead to people pulling out their phone to take photos. In my opinion anyone who could get distracted by this sign, or who would pull out their phone to take a photo of it, would do the same for many other things you might see on the side of the road.

I do not think that humorous road signs are a good idea. While they may produce a laugh for those driving I think they could cause distractions. People may be distracted by reading the funny sign or telling someone they are in the car with about the funny sign and this may lead to an accident. I also think that having funny signs may lead to people disregarding or mistaking a funny road sign for a serious one. This also could lead to accidents if drivers are confused on what road signs to take seriously.

I think this is a great idea. In order to get people more focused on driving and paying attention to what road signs actually say rather than them blending into the lull of driving for hours. There is a reason why some drivers fall asleep at the wheel and one of those reasons is lack of stimulus. If I saw a road sign that cracked a joke and was legitimately funny, I would laugh and start thinking about where I would see the next road sign, which would make my brain more active, in turn keeping me awake. Obviously, all road signs can't be made that way, but the world needs to lighten up a bit and get back to being happy with the basic things in life, like a joke.

I don't see any problem with the humorous road signs. I think they actually draw more attention to the message than simply "don't speed" or something. Anyways states have used rhymes in non-road sign driving campaigns like "click-it or ticket". That has been a slogan around for years. Why would it be okay to use that type of thing every where expect road signs; kind of hypocritical I think.

I think that messing with road signs in irresponsible because it just creates unnecessary confusion. Keeping road signs as simple as possible will allow drivers to understand them the best. It's up to the person if they want to read and follow the directions, trying to do to much with these kinds of things just makes things worse.

I see the idea of what is trying to be done, but I believe that making road signs "funny" can take away from what it is supposed to do. The signs are there to make drivers aware of their situation and let them know about caution, not to make them laugh. If someone misread a sign or did not know what it meant, it could distract them from an important sign.

I do not see anything wrong with humorous road signs. Clearly, road signs that are not humorous are not helping with the distracted driving dilemma in America. I understand that these signs are supposed to be serious, but I do not think that trying a new method to increase safety is wrong.

While I do like the idea of having humor while driving as a way to catch my attention. I fear that depending on how it's done it may be distracting. For instance if the phrase on a sign is too long, people may take a while to read it. Likewise if someone is already a slow reader, they may get more distracted by a sign with multiple words on it. I definitely think that these kinds of signs would be fun for my demographic. I just fear that it may make things more difficult for an elderly age group who may have need a longer time to make out the words. Even for people who don't know english fully and just understand what each standard sign means. Signs with phrases may be confusing. At the end of the day however, I do think it depends on how the signs appear in terms of size, their readability, their length, and the standard designs for them.

To sum up, Wild West Gold Megaways could have been a genuine badass. However, it's not, and that's a shame. If fans of the first were screaming out for a Megaways version, they've got it, but it's hard not to wonder why Pragmatic Play went with the low (for Megaways) max win. idebet slot online

I thought this article was very interesting. I had never really considered the true implications of using funny phrases or pop culture references in concordance with highway safety signs. For me, whenever I see a sign like that, I think that it is funny and it also gets the message across pretty well. I can see how many people would not be as quick to realize what the sign means, or what the actual message is. This could create even more danger, as those drivers may be too distracted by thinking about the road sign and not focused enough on the road ahead of them. Overall, I agree that it is mindful marketing, but I could see the other side and that the signs are not as effective as they are designed to be.
